DISCLAIMER: I am no expert, this is based on my experience and my research.
The beak in all birds are made from kreatin. It is used to groom, eat, drink, kill their prey and to feed their young. Inside the beak there are no teeth. Tiny barbs cover a small triangle tounge. Because of thesse barbs a chicken needs water to swallor their food.
There are diffrent beak deformities that can hit all kinds of birds, but in chickens the scissor beak and parrot beak are the most common ones.
Parrot beak "mandibular prognathism"
Is a type of deformitiy where either the top beak or the lower beak is to short.
Scissor Beak "Crossed beak, Crooked beak, lateral beak"
Refers to when the beak does not algin correctly
What causes beak deformities?
- Vitamin D3 Deficiency
Leads to softening of the beak that causes a malformation. - Manganese Deficiency
Leading to an increased risk of parrot beak - Biotin Deficiency
- Vitamin A Deficiency
- Imbalanced ratio between calcium and phospurus
- Beak Injury.
A trauma that dont get the treatment it needs in the early stages can lead to a deformity. - Inproper incubation techniques
- Avian Pox Virus.
Depending on the location and the severity of the virus it could cause a deformity.
